Biography of Sayadaw U Vimala
Born on 8 February 1950, Venerable Vimala (Taze Sayadaw) was ordained as sāmaṇera at age 9 by Et-Taw Village Sayadaw, The Most Venerable Nandiya as preceptor, and began his Buddhist Pali literature studies.
At age 19, while residing at the Nandayama monastery, Shwe-Bo Town, he studied and passed elementary, intermediate and advanced levels of Pali studies. He was ordained as a Bhikkhu at the age of 20.
Following his first vassa, he continued his Pali studies at Dakkinayama Monastery, Mandalay. In 1975, at age 29, Sayadaw was awarded the title of Sasanadhaja Dhammacariya by the Myanmar government. As the resident abbot at Ashokayama Monastery in Mandalay, he taught and also studied Pali literature. In 1997, he began his further studies at the Pali Department of Banaras Hindu University (B.H.U.), Varanasi, India. In 1999, at age 49, he received his M.A. in Pali Literature (First Class).
In 2002, Sayadaw approached the Most Venerable Pa-Auk Tawya Sayadaw Bhaddanta Āciṇṇa for guidance, under whom he learned and practiced Samatha and Vipassanā meditation. After this, he assisted and advised the Bhikkhus and yogis in the Samatha and Vipassanā practices at the Pa-Auk Tawya Meditation Centre, Mawlamyine as a meditation teacher. Sayadaw was also an advisor at Mawlamyine Township Saṅgha Organization (Shwe Kyin).
Sayadaw is a senior Committee member of the Pa-Auk Tawya Meditation Centre Mawlamyine. He is presently the Resident Teacher at PAMC Singapore, where he continues to support the Sasana.
