Born in 1971 in Kyaikhto, Myanmar, Venerable Ukkansa was ordained as a Novice monk (sāmaṇera) at the age of 17 at a monastery in Kyaikhto in 1988. He received the higher ordination as a Bhikkhu on 23 October 1990 at Kemāsīvaṃ Pariyatti School in Kyaikhto. He learned Buddhist Pāḷi Studies and passed the “Pathama Gyi” examinations in 1998.
From 1998 to 2003, Venerable Ukkansa was a teacher of Pāli language at Sāsana Lyin Yaung Kyi Pariyatti School, at Pago.
In May 2003, Venerable Ukkansa went to Pa-Auk Forest Monastery, learned and practiced Samatha & Vipassanā meditation under the Abbot, the Most Venerable Pa-Auk Tawya Sayadaw. Since December 2006, Venerable Ukkansa has been appointed a Kammaṭṭhānācariya (Meditation Teacher) at the Monastery. He was conferred “Kammaṭṭhānācariya Degree” (Degree as Meditation Teacher) by the President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar in January 2021.
Venerable Ukkansa is a meditation teacher and senior Saṅgha leader of Pa-Auk Forest Monastery, Mawlamyine, Myanmar. Venerable Ukkansa assumed his duties as the Resident Teacher of Pa-Auk Meditation Centre Singapore from April 2008 until 2014, and again from 2022. He has conducted many retreats and taught various Dhamma courses in Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia.
