Sayadaw U Aggañña

Biography of Sayadaw U Aggañña

Ven. Aggañña was born in 1953, in Yenangyaung, Myanmar. He graduated with a BSc degree in mathematics from Rangoon University. At the age of twenty, he started learning and practicing meditation from different teachers at various dhamma centers in Myanmar.

He took a course on the Abhidhamma at a class conducted by Dr. Min Tin Mon. There, he learned about the Most Venerable Pa-Auk Sayadawgyi Bhaddanta Acinna and his method of teaching. Inspired by these teachings, in 1989, he started practicing as a lay disciple at the Pa-Auk Forest Monastery in Mawlamyine, under the direct tutelage of the Ven. Pa-Auk Sayadawgyi. In 1992, he was ordained as a monk by his teacher Pa-Auk Sayadawgyi.

After being ordained as a monk for two years, Pa-Auk Sayadawgyi trained him to become a teacher and appointed Ven. Aggañña as his assistant. When Pa-Auk Sayadawgyi conducted meditation retreats in overseas, Ven. Aggañña was often his assistant teacher.

  • 1997-2001
    In January 1997, he had accompanied with Pa-Auk Sayadawgyi on a missionary trip to Sri Lanka. Between 1997 and 2001, under the guidance of Pa-Auk Sayadawgyi and Venerable Na Uyana Ariyadhamma Maha Thera of Sri Lanka, he conducted many retreats in Sri Lanka. In 2000, he followed Pa Auk Sayadaw to Penang, Malaysia to teach meditation.
  • 2001-2004
    During his stay in Myanmar, he taught meditation at Pa-Auk Forest Monastery, Main Center, Mawlamyine and the International Buddhasasana Meditation Center, Thanlyin.
  • 2005-2006
    For the duration of Vassa, the Buddhist Lent, from 2005 to 2006, he led three months meditation retreats in Ti-Sarana Buddhist Association, Singapore. From 2005 to current, he is appointed as the resident meditation teacher at BMSM-Pa Auk Dhammavijaya Meditation Centre, Dengkil, Malaysia.
  • 2007-2019
    From 2007 to 2019, during Vassa he conducted intensive meditation retreats in Dhammavijaya Meditation Center, Dengkil, Malaysia.
  • In 2019, he was appointed as one of the teachers at Pa Auk Taiwandipa in Taiwan. He continues to conduct meditation retreats in Samanasukhavana Meditation Center Quoxing and Fa Jang Vihara, Gueiren, Tainan.
    He has spent well over 25 years of leading and teaching many meditation retreats in Australia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and the United States of America.
    Ven. Aggañña is one of the Pa-Auk meditation teachers. He has been teaching of both Samatha (tranquility) and Vipassanā (insight) meditation in Myanmar nationally and internationally since 1997.
