Vijjā: Vipassana, Caraṇa: Samatha
Vijjā-Caraṇa-Sampanno (Consummate in Vipassana and Samatha): On the path of practice in accordance with the Buddha’s teachings, practitioners should integrate Samatha and Vipassana meditation to attain ultimate enlightenment.
Buddhist scriptures indicate two types of meditation, Samatha and Vipassana. Samatha meditation is included in the seed of Caraṇa, and Vipassana is included in the seed of Vijjā. But sometimes the practice of Vipassana is also considered as the seed of Caraṇa. For example, if Vipassana is the strongest kamma that ripens at the time of death, it will create a new rebirth-linking consciousness (Paṭisandhi). In this case, Vipassanā is considered as the seed of Caraṇa.
