Should Buddhist followers pursue a degree?

Buddhist and degrees

Living in an educationally developed society, we cannot rush to decline the significance of degrees. Degrees partly demonstrate and evidence our genuine efforts to cultivate professional knowledge if we strictly invest time in studying.

Thus, when we pursue a degree program, we will achieve the following benefits:

  • The spirit of self-discipline in learning is not strong among the ordinary masses, so we need to enroll in a specific study program to be responsible for the economic expenses that have paid for tuition and make serious investment efforts in learning.
  • When participating in a certain learning environment, we will accumulate knowledge systematically. Although our country’s education program or some countries still place substantial emphasis on theory, at least we must learn to nourish further understanding and boost our Vietnamese language skills to use in the major, we are passionate about. If anyone needs to apply acquired theory into practice, they will prepare an effective method that suits their personal demands.
  • A degree proves a process of patiently persevering in studying and practicing oneself. After receiving a degree, we may not have the life experience or lack the ability to adopt the absorbed knowledge to work in a real environment, but the degree is proof and a temporary measure of our efforts for the primary progress of an individual.
  • Furthermore, we can make quality intellectual relationships during the learning period.
  • Equally important, the degree can be utilized in any environment that needs us to confirm our competence.

Additionally, many people have successfully self-studied, or parents select the homeschooling method, educating at home, to navigate their children to study abroad. However, compared to the actual situation, our country has few citizens who can afford to follow this approach long-term, as Vietnam is a developing country. Just like in the Buddhist sphere, many believers make their own efforts to study the teachings and apply them into practice to achieve positive results, as even the Buddha does not possess any degree. In earthly life, many outstanding people do not need a degree, but in the world, there are not many geniuses who have the merit to be persistent and intelligent enough from previous lives.

Hence, when we can make successful efforts through study and practice without relying on the study period to obtain a degree, we will be able to determine that “degrees are not important.” Let’s ponder carefully and perceive where we are and what we need. Don’t follow the crowd and quickly conclude that a degree is nothing, which is the reason for your shortage of diligence and discouragement. Only when you learn to show off or learn without aiming for service or practical application is the degree truly worthless. At least, rather than struggling to decide which path to pursue, we can choose a particular study program to avoid wasting time.

In summary, we expect that the above information and personal experience can support your ability to consider your specific needs to make appropriate choices for your development path in a positive and effective way. Therefore, the above is advice for the majority, but those who have their own path will know how to reach their passion.
