A Journey of Faith and Academia: Her Buddhist Nun Experience and Doctoral Pursuit

Vijjā’s journey as a Buddhist nun and an online doctoral student at an American university has been a unique and profound experience, one that has further enriched her life in countless ways. These two seemingly disparate paths have intersected in a harmonious manner, providing her with a colorful tapestry of insights and experiences.

As a Buddhist nun, Vijjā has committed herself to the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment. The monastic life has taught her the importance of discipline, compassion, and mindfulness. It has provided her with a deep sense of purpose and a connection to spirit greater than herself. Through study, meditation, and service, she has cultivated and promoted a sense of inner peace and tranquility.

Her decision to pursue a Doctor of Education program at a Western university was driven by a desire to contribute to the field of secular and Buddhist education and to apply the principles she has learned as a Buddhist nun to her religious life and professional instruction. She believes that the program can facilitate her with a rigorous academic experience, equipping her with the knowledge and skills necessary to become a thought leader in education.

One of the most significant targets in which her Buddhist nun experience has influenced Vijjā’s doctoral studies has been in the area of mindfulness. Alert awareness, the mental practice of paying attention to the present moment without judgment, is a core tenet of Buddhism. In her doctoral research, she will explore the potential benefits of mindfulness practices for meditators. She expects that mindfulness can help to reduce stress, improve focus, and foster a more kind, compassionate, and inclusive learning environment.

Another orientation in which her Buddhist nun experience has been relevant is in her understanding of community and service. As a nun, she has learned the importance of serving others and contributing to the well-being of her community. This has informed her approach to education, as she believes that schools should be places where students are not only academically successful but also develop a sense of social responsibility and compassion.

In conclusion, her experience as a Buddhist nun and a doctoral student at an U.S. university has been a transformative one. These two paths have complemented and enriched each other, providing her with a unique perspective on life and learning significance. Vijjā is grateful for the opportunity to build and fulfill both of these lofty endeavors. She is also excited to continue to apply the insights and skills she has gained to her work in secular and Buddhist education so as to permeate helpful benefits to life in a more positive way.
